Today was a gorgeous sight on Folly as the annual Surfers Healing event took place! Surfers Healing is a surf camp that was started in 1996, but it is not just your average surf camp. It is a program that travels around the nation, allowing children with autism to get up on surfboards with professionals and ride the waves.
Izzy Paskoqitz gave up his career as a professional surfer 16 years ago to start the program after his son was diagnosed with autism. Many children with autism struggle with sensory overload. Simple sensations can overwhelm them. The weightlessness and rhythms of the ocean offer a therapeutic experience, a respite from the constant assault on their senses.
This is the 10th year the camp has visited Folly Beach. Over the last year, the local surfing community has raised about $30,000 for the camp! Anyone can help out. Interested in attending, contributing, sponsoring, or volunteering….just visit www.surfershealing.org for more information on this amazing program and all it has to offer.
